Roberto Valdeón wrote an introductory article titled “Journalistic translation research twenty-five years on: methods, topics, and prospects” for the upcoming thematic issue of Perspectives. This issue comprises twelve articles on diverse topics, employing various methodologies, and representing the key geographical regions where news translation has received significant attention—namely Europe, North America, and China. The article provides an overview of research in journalistic translation over the past five years and serves as an introduction to the thematic issue. Lucile Davier’s and Ashley Riggs‘ co-edited book Constructive News across Cultures has been published by Routledge in the IATIS (International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies) Yearbook. Constructive news is an alternative to the negativity of if-it-bleeds-it-leads journalism but still unfamiliar to some audiences and still relatively under-researched, particularly by news translation scholars. And yet, it is “done” across cultures and, therefore, languages. This innovative book contributes to filling that research gap and raising awareness of the phenomenon by showcasing cross-cultural research on constructive news, including in the Global South – a region that has traditionally received less scholarly attention than the Global North.

Mairi McLaughlin and Léa Huotari have published an article titled “A mixed-methods analysis of the translation of quotations in international news dispatches” where they examine the translation of quotations in news agency dispatches from English to French. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses of a parallel corpus of source and translated dispatches. The findings discuss the importance of quotations in news agency dispatches and identify factors influencing the retention or omission of quotations in the translation process. The study contributes to our understanding of news translation practices and highlights the need for further comparative research in this dynamic field.
